Every now and then I luck out and find myself in New York during Fashion Week. This month it just so happened that Garcia and I were there and able to attend Ulla Johnson’s Spring 2017 presentation.
We were lucky enough to find ourselves fifth in line and when we entered the open space we instantly felt the romantic vibe. Flowers and greenery by Saipua were dripping from the ceiling giving the illusion that the show was being presented in a dimly lit garden.
Initially I was struck by the accessibility of the show. It was formatted in a way that the audience was able to mill about and interact with the models. This gave off an approachable and effortless feel, much like Ulla’s pieces themselves. There wasn’t any fussiness or pretension. The audience included handbag designer Clare Vivier, blogger Rocky Barnes and more. It truly was the young and hip New York crowd. The clothes were magical and ethereal yet absolutely wearable in everyday life.
I spent the next day at the showroom writing the collection and I found myself struck by the incredible detail in the pieces: the crochet in the lace, the supple leather and the saturation of color were insane. Everything is super wearable and perfect for our lifestyle in Bend, Oregon. I just kept thinking, “I’m dying over here!”
Alas, as much as I wanted to walk out of the showroom with boxes under both arms, we will have to wait for these stunning pieces to be handcrafted. Odds are they will land for us in March or April, but oh ladies, are they worth it!
